High-level meeting moves for price control, traffic streamlining in Ramazan

The Sindh Minister for Agriculture and Supply and Prices, Muhammad Ismail Rahoo, alongwith Commissioner Karachi, Iftikhar Shalwani, held a high level joint meeting regarding control price check of essential commodities and other goods items during holy month of Ramzaan at the Commissioner office on May 2. 

The Deputy Commissioners, Salahuddin (Karachi South), Ali Ahmed Siddiqui (Karachi East), Zahid Memon (Karachi West) and Javed Abbasi (Karachi Malir) attended the meeting along with Abbas Memon (ADC Karachi Korangi) and other senior officers of the Bureau of Supply and Prices and related departments. 

The Sindh Minister pointed out that the painting and distribution of price lists was the responsibility of Market Committee but all FCs and the Bureau of Supply were their support to MC during the holy month, they all should work together for maximum relief are being provided to common people through distribution, display and awareness of general public at all big markets, super marts, and other shops. 

He stated that media will also be taken on board for maximum publicize price lists monitoring and inspections of all sites where complaints of any sort regarding high and non affordable things will be dealt with heavy fines and resolve the grievances of common people. 

The Minister has directed that officers concerned should regular visits and monitor the issues of prices etc in holy month balance the supply and demand if the goods according to schedule prices for maximum relief shown to people by the government and its functionaries. 

Commissioner Karachi, Iftikhar Shalwani, thanked the Minister Agriculture for holding such important meeting over prices in holy month with respective departments and agencies to provide relief at grassroots level. 

He said that control rooms have already been setup in all DC offices and, through his liaison office, approached all concerned and monitor the activities in the holy month. 

He has also sought details of all departments concerned and agencies steps and progress of implementation prior to the holy month, having directed traffic police to take steps for smooth flow of traffic during Iftar time in particular. 

He further directed the all DCs to provide relief to general public in order to maintain sanctity of holy month as compared to the past. 

Traffic police informed that more than 1,000 personnel at seven centres would be deployed to streamline traffic's flow in the city during the holy month while additional water will be made available for people by the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) and 22,700 gallon water will be at disposal on requisition of all DCs and others to cater the needs. 

Prices lists will be displayed by all social, print and electronic media on daily basis for awareness of general public.

Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shallwani meets SCSW delegation

Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shallwani has said that city administration would provide all possible support to the Commission on Status of Women  to achieve  its objective for the  social, economic, political and legal rights of women  .

He appreciated the idea of establishing the Sindh commission on Women Status and observed that it would help achieve the goals of the government initiative to provide women equal opportunities in society.

He was talking to a 4-member  delegation of Sindh Commission on the Status of Women headed by Ms. Nuzhat Shirin which met him at his office.

The meeting discussed various programs  to be organized by the Commission in coordination with the city administration.

The Commissioner was appreciative  of this initiative and assured of his office’s full support. He also appreciated the idea of organizing   programs  by the Commission for celebration of  Women Day to be held on February 12 in the city.

The Chairperson Nuzhat Shirin gave an overview of the SCSW activities  carried out in its first year and shared the Commission’s newsletter with the commissioner..

She informed that SCSW is going to observe the day on Feb 12 on a  under large-scale. The  celebrations in this regard will be held at Arts Council Karachi.This year, theme  will be “Women’s Resistance Against Discrimination”, 

The event will recall not only historical women’s movement but will also discuss how far Sindh has come close  in achieving gender equality, the current struggles and challenges faced along with solutions.. 

The event will also feature women from different professional backgrounds and provide a platform for women to interact and learn from one another. 

An award ceremony has also been planned for achievements made in various fields, including education, health, law, science & technology, banking, politics, women’s rights activism, performing arts and literature by  senior women professionals and mid-career level professionals. 

It will also be an economic opportunity for small scale businesswomen to showcase their products and services, an opportunity for women’s rights organizations to highlight their work while women artists to have a platform for performances. 

Ms. Nuzhat Shirin also shared the research and SOPs developed on safe houses by the Commission, as per orders of the High Court. She urged Commissioner Karachi to establish a model safe house for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence in Karachi based on the SOPs developed by the SCSW. The SCSW will support the Commissioner’s office fully in this endeavor.

The delegation also emphasized  the need to improve women’s mobility in the city. Ms. Nuzhat suggested plying of women  dedicated buses on specific routes during work hours to facilitate women  access to city's business centers as well industrial units.

Shoaib Siddiqui praises role of media in highlighting issues

The Commissioner Karachi, Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, has acknowledged that a vibrant media plays a significant role in highlighting the issues of public importance helping the authorities in solving them.

He made the observation while talking to a delegation of APP Employees Union (CBA) Sindh, led by its President Ehsan Qureshi, who called on the Commissioner on May 23.

Shoaib Siddiqui recognized the contribution of the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), the national news agency of the country, in different fields of national life and noted that the men holding its flag have worked with dedication, having kept the national interest foremost while discharging professional duty.

He was informed by the delegation that this is for the first time in the history of the office of Commissioner Karachi that the APP Employees Union's elected office bearers have been granted an audience by the administrative chief of the country’s biggest metropolis.

The Commissioner Karachi offered every possible support for welfare of deceased senior reporters of this organization and assured to extend support and assistance needed for the good cause.

Shoaib Siddiqui, who took over as Commissioner Karachi in April, stated having received big support from the APP and promised to help in raising funds for the late Chief Reporter of APP Karachi, Khushnood Ali Shaikh, who lost his life in a road accident, and Rafi Nasir, another senior reporter who died late last year.

"We will join hands with APP Sindh Union in their endeavours for extending support to the families of the late reporters," he announced while lauding the services of late Khushnood Shaikh and Rafi Nasir in their journalistic career.

On the occasion, Vice President of the Union Arshad Ahmed Khan briefed the Commissioner about the various plans chalked out for the welfare of members of APP Employees Sindh and introducing the annual awards for them. He also spoke about the plans for holding a reunion of retired APP staffers..

He said the national news agency has always played a positive role in projecting the real public issues through their reporting skills, photo journalism and video news service (VNS).
The other members of the delegation included Faheem Haider (Treasurer), Anwer Ali (Joint Secretary), Members Governing Body Toheed Siddiqui, Shoaib Qamar and Muhammad Saleem.

Taking notice of the lacking coordination among various public service organizations the Commissioner Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui, as a first step, has formed a Divisional Coordination Committee.

The committee comprises of Sindh Police, Pakistan Rangers Sindh, Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Pakistan Steel, Port Qasim Authority (PQA), Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Social Welfare Department Government of Sindh, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), Karachi Building Control Authority (KBCA), Defence Housing Authority (DHA), Traffic Police, Deputy Commissioners Karachi Division., Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (SITE), Malir Development Authority (MDA), Lyari Development Authority (LDA), Civil Defence, Pakistan Railways, Cantonment Boards, Pakistan Telecommunication  Limited (PTCL) and Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).

The committee will act to improve coordination among various organizations of the division besides improving response to public complaints and issues. It will prepare and develop better strategy to combat disasters and resolve inter-organizational complaints/issues. It will work to improve vehicular traffic flow and civic amenities/services

The terms of reference of the committee also include activating implementation of government policies and instructions
The Commissioner hoped that this step will improve the coordination among various public services agencies in Karachi on one hand, help redress grievances and enhance the image of public sector on the other hand.

Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Siddiqi reviews prices

Commissioner Karachi, Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqi, has announced that all out measures are being taken by the Deputy and the Assistant Commissioners against hoarders and profiteers to provide relief to people and action in this respect being taken on daily basis.

Reviewing the price control measures at a meeting in his office, Shoaib Siddiqi noted the action taken against 30 atta sellers, 18 profiteers and five meat sellers and overall fines amounting to Rs 77,900 recovered by the concerned Deputy and Assistant Commissioners while four shop keepers were remanded to jail.

The Commissioner made it clear that undue profit making is a moral and legal offence and directed all the Deputy and Assistant Commissioners to ensure that price lists were conspicuously displayed by shopkeepers to let people know about officially fixed prices.

He also appealed to people that while buying goods, they should demand price list from shop keepers and also force them to display such lists prominently.

He urged the people not to hesitate in registering their complaints with the offices of Deputy and Assistant Commissioners against those charging prices higher than the officially fixed prices.

Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Siddiqi emphasizes on solving problems

Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqi has said that dutiful and hard working officials are always remembered with respect because of their good performance, no matter where ever they are transferred from one department to the other.

He was addressing a ceremony held to bid farewell to his Staff Officer, Syed Afaq Hussain, on his transfer from Commissioner Office to the Chief Secretary Office.

He pointed out that whenever assigned a task, it is surely fulfilled by officials enjoying good reputation and showing good performance.

The administration of Karachi, its officers and employees, are endeavoring to ensure implementation of this kind of system in the public interest, he said while laying emphasis on solving the problems of people can be easily achieved if administration officials strengthen their liaison with the people and establish good relations with them.

“There is no doubt that hard working and dutiful officials not only bring improvement in the departmental working but it also enhances their own respect and prestige,” Shoaib Siddiqi pointed out.

In their speeches on the occasion, other officers appreciated Commissioner Shoaib Siddiqi for introducing the tradition of welcoming the incoming officials and bidding farewell to outgoing ones besides award of commendation certificates and cash awards to them.

They said that such trends would certainly infuse a new spirit of working hard in officials.

Syed Afaq Hussain said that he has learnt he lot from Soaib Siddiqi in a short span of time and this is going to guide him in his future career.

The farewell ceremony was attended, among others, by Additional Commissioner Kamran Shamshad, Additional Commissioner-II and other officials.
